A Will to Live

By Malak Al Saadi

Trying to figure out who you are and where your interests lie may be one of the most frustrating, confusing feelings we go through as we grow up. Are we meant to conform to what society wants us to be? Or are we supposed to build ourselves through the experiences we accumulate? Being unable to cultivate ourselves however we’d like due to our parents, friends or the environments expectations continues to cause a sense of inner struggle, that may eventually leave us defeated. Managing your interests and passions, allowing yourself to explore the different fields present within the world may seem a little skeptical, yet it allows us to walk a path destined for us.

William Jennings Bryan states, “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.” We all have a choice or choices presented to us when tackling a situation or situations. What we need to know or act on, is how to best approach it, whilst keeping in mind that it doesn’t affect anyone, but us, mostly.

The aim of this piece is to help you manage your thoughts and likes, getting you closer to your passions.

In order to begin, ask yourself a couple of questions:

"What would I spend my time doing if I had complete financial abundance to do anything?""What could I do for five years straight without getting paid?"

Being passionate about something does not necessarily place it as a potential job. Not all passions are a source of income, however you can work with it, allowing a different outcome be a source of income.

Another point is: Work out what you hate doing. What makes your blood boil? The faster you clear yourself from the things you loath, the clearer your true passions will become.

Not everyone receives a Eureka moment and discovers their passion overnight. There was a post by a man named Logan Jay stating, "Your true passion is not found overnight, but is realized through series of discoveries of small interests," he says. "I have always regarded thinking/meditating as a process of reading/analyzing your mind, which in turn leads to discovering your true passion."

Remember what you used to do as a child and allow the child within you to flourish by making something new out of it or even just evolving it. Whether it’s drawing or writing stories, creating something new is like obtaining a new passion. It is driven by wanting to offer the world something new to enjoy, whilst making a name for yourself.

Another thing you can do is close your eyes. Invision yourself waking up at the peak of dawn. You have breakfast and get ready for work. What is it you are most likely to be doing? Where are you headed? Do you work from home? Describe the feeling that fills you whilst envisioning.

As we grow up, we do not have to be strict and remain within a certain domain. We grow, change and acquire different traits and hobbies that may appeal to our interests. What we need to do, however, is make sure not to diminish the flame that burns within us. We need to continue to feed the flame. Once we allow our hopes and dreams to simmer away, we slowly begin to lose our will to live.
